This pillar envisions a sustainable and resilient environment, driven by innovative solutions and responsible stewardship, ensuring long-term ecological balance and quality of life.

It focuses on promoting renewable energy, preserving natural resources, advancing sustainable practices and safeguarding biodiversity to secure a thriving and sustainable future for Qatar.

Achieved to date

01 – First National Development Strategy (2011 - 2016)

Adopted alternative sources of energy, such as the establishment of Umm Al- Houl projects, Siraj Energy Company and a number of solar-related industrial companies
Domestic Solid Waste Management Center was opened in Mesaieed in 2011
Launch of Tarsheed national program, which aims to reduce energy and water consumption
Contained domestic waste generation at 1.3 kg per capita per day, surpassing the strategy’s target
Launched a tyre recycling project in 2012 with a recycling rate of more than 60%
Advanced sustainable city planning initiatives.
Significant expansion in the number of integrated parks between 2010 and 2016 with an annual growth rate of 9%
Area of green spaces increased from 0.5 million square meters in 2011 to 1.3 million square meters in 2015
Initiated public education campaigns on environmental issues.
Rebranded Qatar Sustainability Assessment System to GSAS to be MENA’s first integrated and performance-based rating system for sustainability of infrastructure

02 – Second National Development Strategy (2018 - 2022)

Developed and implemented a national climate change strategy
Al Houl Power Plant launched in 2021, and Al Kharsaah Power Plant launched in 2022
Launched Kahramaa incubator for innovation and invention, and launched electric vehicle charging stations in 2016
Electricity consumption was reduced by 18% during 2012-2016
Expanding natural solutions such as the One Million Tree Project
In 2018, Qatar ranked 32 out of 180 countries on the Yale University Environment Performance Index
Total area of mangroves planation increased in 2018 to 21.6 km2
Achieved effective recycling of water, treating an impressive 99.7% of wastewater
Project of inventorying, collecting, classifying and conserving wild plants was completed in the period 2012-2016
Promoted public transportation to reduce carbon emissions
Initiated electric transport infrastructure transformation, which aims to have all public bus fleets converted to electric by 2030
Launch of green building projects such as Msheireb Downtown Doha and Lusail City

03 – Third National Development Strategy (2024 - 2030)

Reduce GHG emissions by –25%
Reach 4 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity
Reduce per capita water consumption to less than 310 litres per day
Maintain protection of 30% of Qatar’s land area and 30% of its marine area
Restore 30% of degraded natural habitats
Reduce 33% in per-capita household water consumption
Reduce 50% of annual food waste
Invest in and adopt cutting-edge environmental technologies
Position Qatar as a regional hub for environmental innovation
