HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, affirmed that Qatar’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games marks a new chapter in the nation’s development and highlights its growing international reputation for delivering world-class sporting events.

HE noted that the candidacy builds on Qatar’s track record of hosting world-class tournaments, most notably the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, widely regarded as the best edition in the tournament’s history.

HE emphasised that Qatar’s track record in hosting major international tournaments has set new standards in operational excellence, providing fans from around the world with a safe, welcoming and inclusive experience. HE also highlighted the country’s signature hospitality, strong community spirit and the social unity that defined Qatar’s hosting model, reflecting the true essence of Arab values.

HE added that the candidacy reflects a broader national vision, one that positions sport as a unifying global language and a catalyst for sustainable development and cross-cultural dialogue. This vision aligns with Qatar’s enduring commitment to “Sport for Peace,” supported by the country’s advanced security capabilities and proven expertise in securing major international events, including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, as well as its ongoing role in supporting the security operations of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has confirmed entering the ongoing Dialogue Phase with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of its official bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, in line with the IOC’s new host city selection framework.

HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the QOC and Chairman of the Bid Committee, noted:

“We believe in the power of sport to bring people and cultures closer together, to empower individuals and to unlock human potential, especially among youth. Our participation in the ongoing dialogue around hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036 reflects a national vision that sees sport as a driver of development and a platform for promoting mutual understanding and peace among nations.”

HE Sheikh Joaan added: “We currently have 95% of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100% readiness of all facilities. This plan is rooted in a long-term vision aimed at building a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable legacy. Our objective goes beyond simply organizing a successful event, we aim to deliver a global experience that reinforces the values of inclusivity, sustainability and international collaboration.”

The QOC affirmed that if selected, Qatar would be the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games—presenting a unique Arab Olympic model built on diversity, openness and sustainability. The bid also aims to elevate regional representation, empower Arab youth and harness the power of sport as a force for hope and peace.

The candidacy reflects the goals set out in Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which aims to build a modern society that balances economic, social and environmental development while placing human well-being at its core. It also aligns with the Third National Development Strategy, which focuses on strengthening national identity, encouraging civic engagement and enhancing Qatar’s international presence through sustainable, integrated pathways.
